As a white kid that had no notion of what cultural appropriation was, I was very attracted to some stuff pertaining to POC, like cornrows or dreamcatchers. Now that I'm grown up and more educated, I understand the concept better and am pretty pissed when I see white people wearing Indigenous headwear or Dia de los muertos makeup for Hallowe'en. But I've been wondering, is there any way, as a white person, to show respect and appreciation to elements of POC's cultures without appropriating it? Like, if I make a dreamcatcher and hang it in my room knowing what it means and what it's here for, am I appropriating or is it okay?
